Sky's thoughts: I absolutely love this story!  HOT HOT HOT! We are provided with an exhilarating story chock-full of action, lust, and mystery as we follow heroine Lexia on her journey as she makes a new discovery in a moment of desperate survival. She has no idea what's happening to her or what she's becoming, but she feels the certain darkness that begins to overwhelm her soul.

I am always a sucker for panther -- or any feline for that matter-- shape shifter. So I was incredibly happy with a new dangerous hero to be added on to the very prestigious list of book boyfriends we adore! He's protective, handsome, and sure knows how to make a girl sweat.

There are many hardships Lexia is forced to overcome as soon she learns more about her history, her mother, what she is. You have to feel sorry for her, everything around her is just crumbling with this new found darkness that she just cannot control. What she would give to just go back to living a normal life, giggling over mundane and other girly things with her best friend Alice, and go back to living her quiet life with her single father.

After certain events, the darkness pulls her in, and this is where I am excited to see what happens next! We will be anxiously waiting over at the Booknatics, just LOVED this story!

Rachel has a VERY promising career ahead of her as an author, and I am excited to see where this series takes us, the reader, as well!
She know's what really captures a girls heart when it comes to a book, and she writes it WELL!

 

 

 

 

Krystles thoughts: I was given this early release copy by the author for an honest review and.....I freakin loved it!!!  This is Rachel Raithby's debut book, and it really seems like she's been writing for years; it was that good!

Lexia seems like your normal/basic teenager that's about to graduate, until 3 vampires corner and attack her; she knows her life is over then from out of nowhere she realizes that she has these 'Superhuman Traits' and is able to defeat them with her bare hands. Off in the distance, a shifter-panther named Lincoln watches and can't believe what he's seeing. A Hunter.... Who's trained to kill off his kind.. He wants to kill her, but he wants to learn a little bit about her first so he starts hanging around, pretending to be passing thru town. What he wasn't expecting was for Lexia to be so alive, so to speak, you'll know what I mean when you read his meaning for her, and he falls for her.

 

The chemistry that these two have for each other is OHMIGOD!!! It was pretty hot! Like...Really hot! I was not expecting that at all, reading along, reading, reading....and whoa...WHOA!!! I loved it! :) I liked Lexia's Best friend Alice as well, hopefully we'll see more of her in the next book since she's now a huge part of Lex's and Linc's supernatural world.

I really loved how Ms. Raithby had Lincoln able to shift at will, and he could become part panther, instead of full on panther. For instance, his claws would rip thru his fingertips so he could climb as human form, etc... That was pretty neat and different, also loved how he would light up all over when he did shift. When Lexia would go in 'Hunter Mode' I swear, I could picture her becoming more buff, taller, faster, just deathly with her eyes blazing yellow. She described the fight scenes very well, I could picture them all fighting in my head like watching a movie.. Let's just say that I hope Lexia's evil B**** mother gets what she deserves, HA!

I received an ARC of Whispers of Darkness in exchange for an honest review.

Honestly, it's awesome!!!

Book 2 of the 'Deadwood Hunter Series' has the same great qualities of book 1. It's action-packed with very steamy scenes between Lexia “The almighty Hunter/Wildcat” and Linc, Lexia's “Pretty Panther”. In this book, Lexia has grown stronger from her Hunter side and is more powerful than ever! And boy is she Hell-bent on stopping the one person responsible for making her this way... and that person is Lucy Hunter, aka, Mommy Dearest.

There are some returning characters from book one, as well as some new ones added in set out to help Lexia and Lincoln on their quest to stop Lexia's crazy mother Lucy. I love Caden and Caleb. Cade is a sweetheart who'll go thru hell and back to help his childhood friend Linc, and Caleb is an older shifter who was Linc's fathers second in command back when there used to be a pack... Back when Linc's parents were alive. I'm glad we got to learn more of Lincoln's back-story in this book.

I'm also intrigued by Lucy's pet Derrick, I came to really like his character and hope we see more of him in the final installment to this series.

As the book goes on, we see Lexia warring with herself, with the darkness inside of her. She knows the hunter side of Maura is trying to take over the sweet side of Lexia and ruin it with the blackness of the hunter ways. Her mother would be so proud.

I have to say, I loved how the book ended!!!

“I named you Maura for the darkness you will bring to this world”

Like in Lexia, there are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. I just love the things that come out of Lexias mouth, she sure is one snarky girl! Ms. Raithby does a fine job describing the scenes and the surroundings of the book, prepare to have a blanket handy while reading...you'll need it when you get to the snowy/forest scenes!! Great, unique story by a very creative mind, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it all ends. Even though it will be sad and there will probably be a book hangover involved ha!

1. Have you always had a passion for writing?

I’ve always had a passion for reading but I didn’t start writing until Lexia popped into my head, it was like a switch had been flipped, and I’ve never looked back 

2. Are any of your characters inspired by real people?

No they just appear in my head one day and I go from there, they have their own personality, I am sure my husband thinks I’m mad when I talk about my characters, like they are real people!

3. Do you know where your stories are going from the start or do you go on the journey as much as the reader does?

Sometimes, it all depends on the character. Lexia came to me half way through the story, whereas the WIP, I’m working on now started at the beginning and I’m slowly starting to see how there story will unfold.

4. How long did it take you to write LEXIA and WHISPERS OF DARKNESS?

I started Lexia in Nov 2012 and published it July 2103, I also planned a wedding and got married whilst writing LEXIA too! I shocked myself at how fast I finished. Whispers of Darkness I started straight after Lexia was published, there were a few months in between when I had morning sickness, I then managed to have it out before having the baby, which was very hard seeing as the more pregnant I got the less brain cells I seemed to have functioning!

5. What are your upcoming projects? Which has you most excited and why?

I have the last installment of Lexia and Lincolns story and also a new book I started a few weeks ago, I’m really enjoying writing these characters, their story isn’t as heavy as Lex and Linc’s so it’s nice to take a break from the hard road Lex and Linc will take in HOLOCAUST.

6. Are you strictly a Paranormal author or will we see different genres from you in the future?

I’m not sure, I have a fantasy WIP but I like Paranormal best, it all depends on the characters I guess!

7. Does what you are reading influence your writing and what are some of your favourite authors/books?

I have trouble writing when I’m reading, when I start a book it consumes my every thought, so I tend to read a book when I don’t feel the need to write. I love all things paranormal and fantasy when it comes to reading, but I do pick up the odd contempary romance. My favorite books are the Psy-Changling Series by Nalini Singh, I can’t pick my fav out of that series they just keep getting better!

I also love Richelle Mead, Vampire Academy and Bloodlines books.

8. What are the biggest challenges you have come across as an author?

Finding time to write in between looking after 3 kids and a husband! Sometimes I get so caught up in a story I just can’t function in real life ha ha

9. How do you stay motivated and avoid writers block.

Sometimes when I need a break, I will just pick up a book and read or take a few weeks off, I think it’s best not to stress, the story will come to you when its ready!

10. Do you listen to music while you write?

Not often the only song I’ve listened too is Imagine Dragons Radio Active, over and over whilst I write fighting scenes. I like silence, not that I get it very often!

Sky's Thoughts: I adored this story so much! Here's a quick(ish) review! (I did go on a bit more than had planned, it was such a nice story!)

Ten years after leaving his life behind, lost amidst the troubles of crime and drugs, a new and sober Jarrett Brandt has returned to his hometown to see his twin brother laid to rest at his grave, and to lay his peace. Unexpected emotions stagger him as he is greeted by his first, real love, the one he left behind so many years ago along with the rest of his family. She had married Jarrett’s twin brother and much to Jarrett’s surprise, had a child together.

The pang of jealousy struck him with guilt and regret for leaving Marissa behind, especially in her time of family troubles while her mother let in a slew of horrible boyfriends, but he quietly accepts that he can't change his dark past. I could only imagine how much of a kick in the gut it was to hear his childhood love’s child call him Uncle, when in his mind, Marissa was always and always will be his, that it should have been his child with her, that he should have never left and gave into the mess he created so long ago.

His ex-girlfriend was his dead brother’s wife, he didn’t know what to make of it...
“He wanted her back—that much he knew---but his life was a damn mess. He couldn’t afford the distraction. He’d f***ed with the wrong people and the price on his head was steep.”

After an invite to stay for Christmas by his nephew, his family is reluctant to agree, not even his own father, ex cop, who is severely disappointed by Jarrett and very unforgiving, refuses to let him stay in his own childhood home. So he stays with Marissa. This is where things begin to really heat up. Naughty, naughty Christmas LOL

The end will have you applauding after a spiral of mystery and thrills that reveal a new hero, but that’s about all I will say to avoid any error in spoiling the fun for YOU! I can only safely advise that there are quite a few heroes that prove themselves by the end of this book. A whirl of emotions and twists arise, and will have your heart melting just about every other page! Splendid!
Some of my other thoughts:
The little boy is so adorable, as he cuddles up with Jarrett after dinner with the family and pours his little heart out about how the other kids at school call him a mama’s boy and say his dad is gone because he doesn’t love him, Jarrett despite his manly self, gushes with affection and great advice. Melted my heart away, and Marissa’s, who was standing beside the door listening in, d’awww.

Between the small Nephew and Jarret: “Let’s eat. Knowing your grandma, she’ll refuse to let us have dessert until we finish what’s already on our plates,”
“She does that. It’s so frustrating.”
I had to giggle at that! Typical kiddo remark haha

I'm ready for the movie version of this book, like...NOW!

After being MIA for 10 years, the hero of the book, Jarrett finally returns to his hometown. Only he doesn't receive a heart-warming welcome-home party from anyone...especially his father. Quite the opposite, in fact, and from what you read about Jarrett’s past, you can't blame them. He was on a self-destructive path led by drugs, who ran away from home like a coward. But the Jarrett we come to learn about now, in the present, is no drugged-up-coward at all!!! * Fans Self * After Jarrett finds out a week ago that his twin brother has been dead for 5 years, he returns home to pay his respects at the cemetery on the 5^th anniversary, without thinking that his family would be there paying their respects as well. As well as his old flame, Marissa, who married and had a son with Jarrett's twin brother Joel. Oops!

All I could think was, awkward!!! Poor Jarrett! You could tell that he still had feelings for Marissa, and she for him as well. Sooo, after she simply asks him to stay, have lunch and talk with her, he quickly accepts her offer. Then that offer turns into her son Jason – his nephew – inviting him to stay over at their house during the Christmas holiday, since Jason doesn't want his new favorite uncle to be alone on Christmas morning!

And what a Merry Christmas Marissa and Jarrett had!! * Snickers *

 

Without giving away too much from the book, I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed it, and really loved what Jarrett ended up doing with his life, instead of continuing down the drugged-up path that would have eventually killed him. I liked the way that the characters meshed with each other, and that Marissa wasn't a “girly-girl” if you will, but a strong-minded woman. I liked her character a lot. Jason was adorable as well.

Oh yeah, I especially loved that Marissa was a little...experimental, shall I say, when it comes to certain activities in the bedroom. The Christmas present Jarrett gives her is awesome! He's a keeper, for sure! LOL

Some lines that I loved from the book -

“Who said I was good?” He stepped back and fired the gun at Bill's leg. – That.Was.Awesome. LOL!

“Make love to me Jarrett, before I wake from this dream.” – Marissa to Jarrett.

"But what’s Julian got to do with all of this? About my age, he’s too young to be my mother’s lover. So why doesn’t he leave her side? Ever. He’s different, as in the paranormal kind of different, but he’s sa-woon-worthy gorgeous. He obviously has secrets, but he’s also get-under-my-skin charming. In short, he’s a riddle to me. But he likes me, and that’s scaring the shit out of me. I sure won’t let anyone come too close."

I absolutely cannot spoil what the paranormality of this story is based on, it would SO give away the fun of the endless guessing, “Just who the hell is JULIAN?! THIS BLUE EYED freakin’ beauty who has the touch of magic and hot greatness?!” --as said by me, countless times T_T *fans self*

A hint for some of you who know me, it’s my favorite genre, just put it that way, LOL.

As you can see, I was totally gripped by this story. I was on the edge of my seat with suspense, turning page after page, laughing, snorting even face palming at certain points. Not a slow moment goes by and this story is so strongly written, that there really is nothing for me to complain about—AT ALL—

I have a soft spot for orphaned heroines, always will.  Though not completely orphaned, rather, put in a foster home at a young age by her own mother who chose an abusive boyfriend over her own daughter is, Jona; who to me, was the perfect heroine.

Jona is not full of herself, she knows where she came from. She gets into a LOT of trouble, and she’s got quite the snarky mouth and is always finding herself in the local police department, so much that they know her by NAME! (LOL!) I totally get it though; I don’t blame her for her attitude.  She tries so hard to be tough on the exterior, but inside, she’s just as broken as the next abused/neglected child, but she won’t for one second let that softness show. Much respect.

Funnily enough, she’s made friends with one of the officers. He’s got a good head on his shoulders and tries so hard to keep Jona grounded-- he’s so protective of her, it makes me so happy that I can’t help but smile. I love it, because,  after all the bad stuff she goes through as a child, there’s one person in the world she can fully trust. It’s a completely platonic thing between them, which is nice because ultimately, there is no real love triangle going on, which betters focuses on the story that’s to come later.

Well, the story begins with the one last troubled incident that Jona got herself into and  is the last straw for her, no more free out of trouble cards--  The county judge has put his foot down and has demanded that she put in some time for community service…but in a totally different country… with her mother… in France. *shifty eyes*
Turning to face the crowd in the courtroom, she sees her mother , back in town and is severely ill with not much time left… And a seriously gorgeous, young, blue eyed boy who… ew… cannot stop touching her mother!

As you read on, you’ll begin to question as well, just who is Julian…There’s definitely something strange in the way his touch on your skin melts you into a state of peace and tranquility.

Anyhoo, --trying so hard not to spoil anything, I am already raving enough, this may be the longest review I’ve done LOL—
Jona begins to see that the relationship between her mother and him, is stranger than she could think. What is this old hag doing with someone close to her age?!?!

I love how Julian is just as snarky, he’s sexy in an enigmatic, sleek way that you may be finding yourself even dreaming of him at night.

The romance that builds from here takes time, just like love you would find outside of the fictional world. Jona begins to see that it’s okay to soften, that it’s okay to forgive her mother and let people in. She’s fallen in adoration for the house maids and everyone else, that she even begins to let Julian in… A beautiful friendship is bonded, and then so much more to come between them.

But, my dear friends, this story will explode the closer you get to the ending, SO much more exciting! There was NO way I was going to put this book down!!

  I am such a huge fan of this author now, that I will have to buy every book of hers now, just to be wrapped up in her style of writing for days to come; to be lost in fictional world that feels so real, is truly a pleasure.

It all begins when, Julie --an orphaned high school student living with her uncle and cousin-- is assigned to shadow a job of her choice for 20 hours for a class assignment. Little did she know, it was all set up by her Uncle Charlie, Chief of Police. Oh the joys of living in a small town and the influence their residents can inflict.

She is not happy about this project one bit, and dreads it for many a reasons. (I so don’t want to spoil it, the emotion that the reader feels when we find out, is so raw, so real I couldn't help but make a little pouty face LOL)

Unexpectedly, she gets more than she bargained for out of the situation; a slight crush on this dashing young officer, but also, later finds out the attachment to him had a certain fated destiny... he too holds a dark grudge. Finally, someone for Julie who knows just what grief is who suffers from the same sort of loss.
It’s sweet how they both sort of help each other cope and that it’s okay to move on from the grief in their hearts that make them a bitter person.

Her uncle is one sly man, he knew exactly what he was doing when he suggested the assignment and paired the two up!

I can't wait to finish the series!

Firstly, thank you, Jennifer, for a copy of your book to review!

Where to start?
I was an instant fan of Ms. Sage from the moment I finished the first few chapters.

The first installment in the “Guardian Archives” gave me a sense of familiarity of worlds I have fallen in love with in the past. However, it certainly holds up its own brand of uniqueness. The world-building is so incredible that I fell instantly drawn in. In fact, I didn’t even realize how absorbed into the story I was until my dog started howling at the neighbors. I jolted out of the scene, finding that I was several chapters in, just absolutely startled. THAT my lovelies, means triumph to the author who can cause any sort of reaction like that out of me.  

 I have also got to say, I am a huge fan of “Brotherhood” like novels; for the amount of time that my friends and I spend battling over book boyfriends, there's one for each of us to fall in love with and claim! And that certainly does not exclude this brotherhood of Guardians-- which by the way, everyone already knows I am quite obsessed with anything Angel/Guardian related. So this series is a huge bonus for me! We had a mixture of our deep fantasies of flawed and dangerous heroes, and relatable characters we can nod our head in agreement to many things they mention or find bothersome/enjoyable. The author says so in her biography, that she loves to add a bit of herself into each of her stories. I agree that it's vital in the making of a world that is still so far out there, but doesn't distract the reader from stopping a moment realizing, there's no traces of any soul in any characters!

Oh believe me, Ms. Sage aced that! Her characters are nothing short of vibrancy and life.

The few characters we were introduced to from the beginning were completely fascinating from the get-go. First, we are taken through a moment in Keltor's head and experience the pain he suffered from losing his wife and children. Then, he is paid a visit by his “Brother",  Lucio, and is given a task to “babysit” a unsuspecting Keeper, because she lives a mere mortal life and has no idea who she is-- it’s time for her to be trained and learn exactly who she is. Keltor is trusted for this task over any of the other Brothers, simply because of his pained past; they know he cannot afford, nor has the ability to fall in love and mess things up.

Later, we were introduced to more characters who all have their own roles in the main characters lives and the ones trying to screw everything up.

 There were quite a few plot twists and surprising incidents, and things just kept getting more and more intense. I had my hypothesis all planned out for the ending, but was delighted to see things were unpredictable. I am definitely going on to the next book as soon as it’s available!   


Some of the extra perks I found to be brilliant in this story was the witty dialogue, there were quite a few comical situations and arguments.  Ms. Sage's ability to create such raw emotions through words, is truly enveloping.

I wanted to reach through the pages so many times to give each of the characters the biggest of hugs. Oh, not to mention… the SEXUAL TENSION?! I live for it, HAHA! It was at times so frustrating that I had to throw my head back and mumble a few expletives, but in all honesty, I have such a guilty pleasure of teases such as those scenes. Well done, Ms. Sage, well done. ;)

However batty the frustration drove us, it was totally worth it later on. Freakin'. HOT. Just explosive. You’ll see.  

I will definitely be recommending this to any of my friends who appreciate superb PNR .

I found this PNR to be quite enjoyable, it had some J.R. Ward flare to it with a hint of KMM, and some Larissa Ione. If you like those gals, give this one a read!!! Some fun snarky humor from the heroine Liz and a whole lotta HOT with the mind-reading hero Kelt. Also, I wanted to thank the author for gifting me her book for a review!

You have your Immortal Guardians, who make sure that the darkness cannot take over the light of the world. Keltor is one of these guardians, and has lived a life of solitude for a very long period of time. That is, until he met the keeper, Elizabeth. Which she didn't even know that this paranormal side to her world existed. ~~ I loved Liz's crash course to her new reality, I know I would have been seriously hair brained for a while!

So Liz is a Keeper and prior to her, they've always been men. Keeper's are sought after by the Demons of the Shadows, wanted by the darkness with the ability to destroy Guardians if they cross over from the light. If that happens, they forfeit their soul and become Immortal as well. The whole time all of this is being explained to her, she's thinking that she will end up just like her mother at the insane asylum. Her mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia when she was 11 years old, but Liz had suffered a nightmarish childhood living with her long before that. That was heartbreaking, no idea how a mother can look at their child and think of them as the devil spawn, then beat them.

~~For a while, it was a mystery as to how Elizabeth can be well into her thirties and remain unknown as the Keeper to either the light or the dark. I liked the idea of her having a spell casting sorceress as her grandmother. ~~

I loved Ms. Sage's reasoning on why her Guardian's needed blood. Since they're immortal, their bodies no longer produce it, so they are 'forced' to drink it. Since they're not exactly vampires they don't just go stalking the streets for some unsuspecting victim because they 'want' to drink it. <---- I liked that :) .

Liz and Kelt's romance that they had together was all kinds of Hot'N'Steamy!! I started feeling sexually frustrated right along with the poor girl when, at the beginning of the book he would start something and abruptly end it. I don't want to reveal too much -BUT- the scene where they made their eternal connection. OMIGOD , it very very raw and 100% sweet.

Some characters that were favorites of mine were of course Kelt, because duh.

Liya- Badass warrior of the White! I was so happy that she got her happy ending, so to speak. Now we'll just have to see if Dante will give her, her other happy ending ! =P

Lucio- Being the son of the Pure one, he's like all of the other Guardian's mentor. His character was very fatherly and sweet. I liked his ability to see the footprints of the past so to speak, very cool idea.

I enjoyed young Kate and Logan's meeting/ time spent together as well. Everything seemed to tie in together nicely! Well worth the read. =)

– There was a part of the book I wanted to point out. There's a scene where Liz is talking about good quality furniture and how you can't find them made like that anymore. All you get at the store is cheap pressed particle board. THAT IS SO TRUE, lol when I read that I laughed out loud.
